World Health Organization suggests 14 ways by which one can protect eyes: – 

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes.

  • Practice frequent hand washing.

This has become a compulsory habit to wash your hands, especially after Covid. Washing your hand regularly keeps bacteria away and prevents them from getting infected. In case you wear contact lenses, or eyeglasses washed hands are very important to touch eyes.

  • Protect your eyes from the sun.

The lights of the sun are beneficial to balancing our body hormones and vitamin D.But, exposure to sunlight and UV rays increases the risk of cornea and sunburn. What we can do is put on sunglasses while exposing out to the sun. Many people see sunglasses as a statement of fashion but it is for the safety of your eyes. If you are not comfortable enough to wear sunglasses you can carry a cap or a hat.

  • Stay hydrated.

  • Do blink 20 successive times to prevent your eye from dryness.

  • If you are in your 40s and 65s and do not have eye issues, visit the doctor every 2-4 years.
  • Lastly, if you are in your 65s and then visit the doctor every 1-2 years.
  • Take your contacts out at the end of the day. 

Yes, wearing a contact lens for more than 19 hours can harm your eyes. Long-time wear of contact lenses can damage your vision permanently. It will lead to discomfort in your eyes.

  • Never sleep with your contact lenses.
  • Your eyes need regular supplies of oxygen. Lenses block the flow of oxygen to the eyes, especially during sleep.
  • Do not swim while wearing contact lenses. Unless you are wearing tight-fitting swimming goggles.
