the world health organization

The drug addiction epidemic is rapidly spreading among Indian youngsters. Unfortunately, drug traffickers like operating in India. This is the case because it is in the middle of the ‘golden triangle’ and the ‘golden crescent. Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos make up the first region, whereas Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran make up the second. Today, AGWO the World Health Organization will discuss on Drug Addiction and Youth.

Addiction to a certain drug, especially narcotic drugs, is referred to as drug addiction. These are often illicit substances that have an impact on a person’s mood and conduct. In India, drug addiction is a societal ill. The tragedy of our day is that millions of young people, who will eventually become citizens of India, succumb to the drug habit. As a result, these addicts  headed for a slow but certain death. It is a social problem that has an impact on both the person and the country as a whole. AGWO the world health organization also work for slum children who are knowingly or unknowingly trapped in this vicious circle.

Drug addicts lose their mental ability, feeling of warmth, friendliness, and social awareness. They eventually develop psychotic symptoms. Additionally, they could have torture mania, a fixation with persecution. They start to acquire a propensity for suicide as well. The majority of young people who live in hostels are easily tempted by drug addiction.

Moreover, the most frightening aspect of drug addiction is the fact that individuals are developing addictions to various substances. Street drugs come in a variety of forms, including cocaine, meth, marijuana, crack, heroin, and more. One of the most hazardous substances, heroin lowers the activity of your heart and is used to produce drowsy effects. The World Health Organization on Increase of Drugs Problem

According to the World Drug Report 2022 published by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), 284 million people use drugs worldwide. The research asserts that one of the biggest opium marketplaces in the world is India. Youth in India are among those most affected by the problem. Punjab is the source of more than 60% of all illegal narcotics recovered in India. The majority of addicts, according to a research, are between the ages of 15 and 35, and many of them are jobless.

Undoubtedly, this is the main cause of drug addiction in India.
India is one of the world’s top opiate consumers and it would likely be susceptible to an increase in the supply given the indications that opium smuggling from Afghanistan may increase in addition to the traditional south and westward routes through the Balkans.

Drug addiction is essentially a neurological disorder that alters how the brain functions. A drug addict shows compulsive drug-taking behavior as a result of their irrepressible drive to use drugs. Drug addicts are unable to manage their drug consumption, and as a result, they are unable to carry out their daily obligations effectively. Because an addict grows dependent on a particular substance, drug addiction and drug dependence are terms used interchangeably.

Impact of Drugs on Individual, Economy and Society

Drug misuse is a major threat to society. Drug abuse increases the likelihood of accidental harm, accidents, domestic violence, health issues, and death. The economic potential of drug addicts is substantially diminished. They either fail to join the workforce or, even if they do, leave the organization because of absenteeism and other problems. Relationships with friends, family, and the general public are impacted personally. Low self-esteem brought on by drug use breeds despondency, which promotes criminal behavior and even suicide thoughts.

Many people do not comprehend the reasons behind drug and related substance addiction. They incorrectly see drug misuse as a societal issue and stigmatize addicts as being weak. Though the precise mechanism by which drugs affect the brain is unknown to science, it is possible to successfully treat drug addiction to assist users in quitting using drugs. People can counteract the negative consequences of drug addiction with a variety of therapies, regaining full control over their lives.

Steps to Tackle Drug Addiction

There are things we can all do to prevent drug and/or alcohol misuse even if it’s almost impossible to stop everyone from consuming illicit drugs. You might be able to stop others around you from using drugs by imparting this knowledge to them. The top five techniques to discourage drug usage are as follows:

1. Deal with Peer Pressure

The most common reason teens begin using illegal drugs is peer pressure from their peers. Nobody likes to be left out, and teens (and some adults, too) will do things they would never do otherwise just to fit in. In these situations, you must either find a better group of friends who will not press you to do harmful things or find a good way to say no. Teens should plan ahead of time a good excuse or plan to avoid giving in to tempting situations.

2. Take Help from People

During this sensitive period, people should take help from their close ones. You should probably share your anxiety, worry with them, as this will help you to reduce pressure. They will encourage and support you. Along with this, you must consult the doctor.

3. Deal with Life Pressure

Subsequently, people now a day’s tackle with a lot of work pressure as well as other pressure too. Due to this, to feel good people indulge in some risky activities, but at the end, they feel more stressed than ever. Instead of including in this activity, you should rather tackle these situations.

Government Initiative for Drug Addiction

Since 1985, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has run a Central Sector Scheme of Assistance for Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drug) Abuse to help identify, counsel, treat, and rehabilitate addicts through nonprofit as well as other eligible organizations. In accordance with this programme, funding is provided to nonprofit organizations and qualified organizations in order to operate and maintain Integrated

Rehabilitation Centers for Addicts.

The National Institute of Social Defense has also established a National Centre for Drug Abuse Prevention to offer technical assistance to the government on policies pertaining to substance abuse prevention and offering services for substance reduction. Additionally, this Center runs training programmes for de-addiction centre staff members and capacity building initiatives. The NDPS act amended three times i.e. on 1988, 2001, and 2014.
