An emerging NGO working for Education of the Poor to empower them

AGWO is an NGO working for education of the poor children. Due to extreme poverty, poor children lack education. There are a lot of reasons that are contributing to this disturbance. There is a huge difference between their income and the cost of education. They barely earn to meet their survival needs. Due to illiteracy a lot of problems occur in society. Some of them are: –

  • NGO working for education
  • No proper maintenance of sanitation and cleanliness.
  • Lack of basic amenities like food.
  • Not sending children to schools to get an education.
  • More child labor due to less income.
  • The widespread practice of female fortified.
  • Child marriage

We aim for projects after regular intervals of time with new and beneficial changes. Projects that focus on health checkups, awareness campaigns, counseling, and food distribution. Our NGO provides special attention to disabled children. The education of deprived children has been always a matter of concern. Because many small children are left deprived of education. Slum areas are rapidly increasing in metropolitan cities. The Delhi Urban Shelter and Improvement Board also gives a ballpark figure, that 3 million people live in 600,000 households in urban slums.

Let’s discuss some reasons that may be responsible for the increase in sums in India.

The growth rate of population (Urbanization)

The first reason is the holistic growth of the Indian population is very high. This growth rate is much higher in urban areas as compared to rural areas. Because of the migration of a large number of people from rural to urban. Due to poverty, unemployment, lack of other amenities, and more to elevate their status. People migrate to urban areas, and facilities in the cities are a honey trap for the rural. The growth rate of basic amenities in the urban areas does not keep pace with the growing population. This difference in the growth rate provides space for the development of the slums.

Poor housing planning

Due to the lack of affordable housing, poor families plan to live in slums. Lack of financial resources and a lack of government help for the poor are responsible for this. The government needs to plan proper housing for every family living in slums. When people do not have access to houses how will they manage the school fees? This is why our NGO working for education came up with the idea of virtual education. Here we visit slums and, in our camps, we educate children with the help of projectors.

Slow development of Villages

The Villages in India are not Developed even on the basic need level. Even today people face the scarcity of water, electricity, and many basic amenities. This lack of facilities in rural areas forces people to migrate to urban areas. This increases pressure on the urban population. Though this is not the much-pronounced reason for the genesis of slums it still is one of them.

Vote politics

Vote politics also support the slums. Removal of slums brings conflicts of interest for politicians. The slum population forms a good amount of easy vote banks. Politics want them to remain as they are. Because their upliftment and education will hurt their vote bank.

High house Rents in Cities

Slum peoples, most of which come from rural areas, are not able to pay the high rent of houses in the towns. Hence, wherever they find land, public or private, they start living in a temporary hut. As time progressed, more and more people join them and that area soon develops into a slum. When we talk about house rents in metropolitan cities, they are much higher. Because they are unable to pay for cemented houses they start living in hutments.

Refugees

Some of the slum areas in India are also inhabited by refugees. The slums are the areas that are not planned by the government it made up on their own. We feel the main cause for the increase in slums is that there is less development in villages. Everybody wants to live better than their current situation. This thought makes them shift from villages to cities. This is also an important factor in the overcrowding of cities. Growing slums create pressure on the cities because of the increase in population.

So only way to abolish slums is to prevent migration from villages to urban areas. But this will eradicate the problem like employment generation in small towns.

Lack of Education

This is the biggest problem that is causing all the above problems to not be resolved. Because they do not send their children to school their mental growth stops at the income level. We as an NGO working for education in India fill this gap by educating them. Along with distributing education supplies to the children of slums.

Some impacts of slums creation: –

Shortage of space

About 13% (1.8 million) of the urban dwellers in Delhi live in one room and lakhs of them sleep on the footpath. About 52% of the households of the metropolis live in these slums. This gave rise to the problem of shortage of space.

Prone to natural and man-made hazards

As in slums, houses are overfilled with little space. They are often prone to dangerous hazards like floods, water logging, fire, etc.

The extent of hazards always increases because of the high population density. The slum areas of Delhi (Yamuna-Pushta) are affected by the flood,-water of Yamuna every year. The Kutcha houses of slums catch fire in summer more often.

Poor living conditions

As we know that slums are not planned, hence, they lack basic amenities. Slums have an extreme unhygienic condition. There are no toilets and people defecate in open. Slums have no proper drainage system. Most of the slums are near drains that contain filthy stagnant water. This causes the birth of a lot of new diseases.

Health hazards

The poor living condition in slums affects the health of people. Water contamination cause disease like blood dysentery, diarrhea, malaria, typhoid, jaundice, etc.

Sometimes children with bloated bellies or famished skeletons, many suffering from polio. People are not aware of health problems. Also, they do not have the money to get the treatment.

Social problems:

Slums remain isolated from the rest of the urban society. This exhibit pathological social symptom like drug abuse, alcoholism, crime, and vandalism. We have to take care of slums and slum-dwellers like we take care of cities and their people. They should not be treated like untouchables.

Wrapping up:

Rapid urbanization and industrialization have resulted in the growth of slums. We need to focus on availing of the needs rather than removing them from society. You can read more articles on our website https://www.agwo.org/.  Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
